COMBONI MISSIONARY SISTERS

The Comboni Missionary Sisters, established in 1872 by Saint Daniel Comboni, the first bishop of Central Africa, are dedicated to serving the most impoverished and marginalized individuals globally, particularly in Africa. Born in Limone Sul Garda, Italy, St. Daniel Comboni emphasized his commitment to the needy, famously stating, “The poor will always find room in my heart.” The congregation, following his legacy, started its mission in Uganda in 1918, aiming to bring Christian values to all people. Their work encompasses various ministries, including evangelization, health care, education, promotion of women’s and youth initiatives, leadership formation, and the advocacy of justice, peace, and environmental integrity, embodying their charism as women of the Gospel dedicated to mission ad gentes.

  • Spreading the word of God about the Universal love of God in Jesus Christ to those who do not know him, especially most disadvantaged, and the most abandoned members of society.

  • Being bridges between peoples. By being women of dialogue and reconciliation, bridging the gap between peoples, cultures, and religions, as well as between those who exclude and those who are excluded.
  • By helping the local Churches to develop a missionary awareness, communicating to them the passion for evangelization. which cannot be separated from a commitment to justice and peace.

The History of Comboni Missionary Sisters

The beginnings

The Comboni Missionary Sisters were founded by Saint Daniel Comboni, who was born at Limone sul Garda in Italy in 1831. ​Comboni’s early life was marked by poverty, which led him to pursue education in Verona institute of Don Mazza for the poor and intelligent children and ultimately a vocation to missionary service in Africa. ​He was ordained a priest in 1854 and founded the first Institute for African Missions in 1867 (male); From experience he emphasized the role of women in evangelization by establishing the Pious Mothers of Africa in 1872. ​Comboni’s mission was driven by the motto “Save Africa through Africa,” advocating for justice and the abolition of slavery. ​ He died in 1881, leaving us the legacy/Charism to continue the mission of Christ through his followers. Comboni Missionary Sister were regarded essential for Comboni as they were the ones who could infiltrate the African families.

Arrival in Uganda ​

The first Comboni Sisters arrived in Uganda on December 6, 1918, after a challenging journey from Khartoum, Sudan. ​The initial group consisted of five sisters: Amalia Lonardi, Rosalba Girlanda, Luigia Quaglia, Carla Troenzi, and Camilla Uberti. Their mission began in Gulu, where they engaged in catechism, nursery education, and health care, quickly gaining the trust and affection of the local community.

Expansion of Missionary Work ​

Following their initial success, the sisters expanded their presence to other regions, including Kitgum, Arua, Angal, Moyo, and Lodonga, establishing schools, dispensaries, and community outreach programs. ​They faced numerous challenges, including language barriers and harsh living conditions, but their commitment to serving the local populations led to significant growth in the Christian community. The sisters’ work included teaching, health care, and social support, which helped to establish a foundation for local congregations and community development. ​

Legacy and Ongoing Mission

The Comboni Missionary Sisters have played a crucial role in the formation of local religious congregations, empowering Ugandan women to take on leadership roles in the Church. ​They have adapted their mission strategy to focus on training local leaders and transferring responsibilities to indigenous congregations, ensuring sustainability and local ownership of the Church’s mission. The sisters continue to serve in various capacities across Uganda and beyond, with a demographic presence of 950 sisters in 32 countries, emphasizing their commitment to evangelization and community service.
